How did you attract/address your audience?

Before I started my magazine I carried out a few surveys for my demographic target audience. The survey consisted of questions which would help me create an urban magazine, it will feature what my audience want, therefore be more appealing.

One main factor for my audience is colour scheme, due to the urban art and graffiti. I did a further survey asking 10 people who represented my target audience to suggest a colour scheme. One trend was the grey urban landscape; I included this throughout my magazine for consistency.

I also asked my target audience about the images I would use for my magazine, they suggested not to follow conventions of artists smoking, showing money or drinking, as it gives society a negative view, they suggested to have images which still contains the urban roots but to be positive, I incorporated this into my whole magazine.

Negative Images

Positive Images

Another point was to include the right artist's in the magazine, my target audience suggested to feature young, urban artists, as they can relate, rather than following conventions of older artists, they also suggested to include up coming events about the artists.
Finally my audience wanted the double page spread feature article to be appealing, for this reason I included as many images to balance the text to image ratio, I used bold and artistic fonts for puffs, I also made my double page spread more appealing, one side contains a whole A4 image, whilst the other contains text.

Evaluation 2

How does your media product represent particular social groups?

The image for my front cover was used to test  the convention of artists on front covers, I challenged  this convention as I didn’t want to follow the stereotypical views of artists smoking and wasting money on chains.

I followed the convention of this specific  Vibe cover, it doesn’t contain any illegal substances such as drugs, no gold chains are included or a large sum of money. T.I is portrayed in a positive way, this shows how artists differ, in modern days we are seeing more positive  attitudes towards underground and urban culture. I chose to do this as my demographic  audience  are not fans of negative views. However I still followed the convention of certain iconography such as casual clothing, this is to reflect the urban genre which my magazine concentrates on. My front cover does not break the whole hip hop music magazine convention . The posture and hand sign to go with the iconography clothing  are followed conventions.  The colour scheme also relates to my audience, the grey urban landscape is used throughout my magazine.

Feature

My double page spread was inspired by hip hop magazine such as vibe and XXL as they distribute in this form.
The picture for my double page spread does not  follow conventions of artists again smoking, drinking or showing off money, instead I portrayed an artists for who they are. It’s the talent that makes people want to read and not products, I chose to go against how artists are represented in the media, the negative views are exaggerated then globalised , not every artists commits crime, gets tattoos and spends a large amount of money on alcohol, no-one is concentrating on the positive views. The only iconography in this picture is the t-shirt with written text, this is used in modern urban culture to advertise their music. I used this to relate back to my urban fans and to relate to the genre.

Negative Media views on artists.

My Feature article

Content

My contents page only contains information which relate to urban culture and not mainstream information, my demographic audience do not pay attention to celebrity news.
